Do's & Don'ts

Taking precautions every step of the way.

Before and after your treatment you should:

  • Drink plenty of water. Keep yourself well hydrated before and after your treatments. Drinking water is a necessary and important part of eliminating the broken down fat.

  • Maintain a low-calorie/low-fat diet for a few days after your treatment to ensure the energy released by the treatment is properly metabolized and utilized by the body.

  • Remember fat elimination is accelerated by the amount of water you drink!

  • We highly recommend you bring a faja, waist-trainer, or corset to your procedure.

Before and after your treatment you should NOT:

  • Do NOT wear any make-up, lotions, or creams on the treatment area on the day of treatment.

  • Do NOT drink alcohol 24 hours before treatment. Also, avoid alcohol for at least 72 hours after treatment. Alcohol affects your liver, it is important that your liver is healthy and able to process the fats released by the treatment Alcohol is also dehydrating and will affect results!

  • Do NOT have caffeine on the day of your treatment. If possible avoid caffeine for 24 hours before your treatment. You may have your normal caffeine intake after your treatment.

  • Do NOT tan or spray ran 24 hours before your treatment.

  • Do NOT apply any topical products to the skin of the area to be treated. NO lotions, creams, gels, oils, perfume, etc. This will affect treatment results. If you can not avoid having a skincare product when you arrive for your appointment please let us know so the product can be washed off before starting the session.

Pre Skin Tightening:

  • Do NOT undergo any skin peel or laser procedures for 2 weeks prior to the procedure.

  • Do NOT wear any make-up, lotions, or creams on the treatment area on the day of treatment.

  • If you have a history of cold sores, please DO let the nurse or physician know.

  • DO hydrate well the day of and day after treatment as this will result in a more comfortable and effective treatment.

Post Skin Tightening:

  • DO hydrate well after treatment as this may produce a better result.

  • DO NOT vigorously rub the skin after treatment, DO gently wash your face and continue with your usual skincare routine.

  • Do NOT undergo laser treatments, chemical peels, waxing, the use of depilatories, or microdermabrasion for 3-4 weeks after treatment.

  • DO wait 7 days before resuming the use of Retin-a (tretinoin), Renova, Differin, Tazorac, Ziana, Veltin, Atralin, glycolic acids or any other exfoliating agents such as a Clarisonic Brush.

  • DO expect some possible tenderness, swelling, warmth, and redness on the treated areas for a few days to a week after treatment.

  • DO sleep on two pillows for the first 24-48 hours post-treatment to decrease swelling.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Your lips will likely be swollen after the procedure. You may also notice some redness or slight bruising at the injections sites, which is normal. Most side effects will be minor, and you will be able to resume most activities once the procedure is done.

  • Apply ice to your lips afterward using an ice pack or an ice cube covered in cloth (so it doesn’t stick to the lip and cause pain). This will help ease swelling, itching, bruising, and any other pain.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours after you get lip or any other dermal fillers. Elevated blood pressure and heart rate from exercise may make swelling or bruising worse. It’s fine to engage in a light activity like walking.

  • Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water will help your body heal.

  • Eat plenty of hydrating fruits and vegetables and try to avoid excess sodium, which may worsen swelling.

  • Avoid high temperatures like steam rooms, saunas, or heated exercise classes for 48 hours after treatment. High heat can make swelling more pronounced.

  • If you’re getting lip fillers for a specific event, make sure to leave plenty of time in between the procedure and the event to allow your lips to properly recover.

  • Try to sleep with your head elevated on pillows to reduce swelling. Do not sleep on your face.

  • Avoid makeup on your lips for up to 24 hours after.

What to avoid:

Here are a few other things your doctor will likely recommend avoiding after your lip filler procedure:

Stop smoking

Smoking can increase the risk of infection, so it’s important not to smoke immediately after getting lip fillers. You may also want to avoid being around others who smoke.

Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol acts as a blood thinner and should be avoided for at least 24 hours after getting lip fillers. Alcohol can cause inflammation, increase the likelihood of bruising, and make swelling worse. It’s also a good idea to avoid alcohol a few days before your appointment.

Don’t fly

Your doctor will likely recommend that you wait at least a week after your treatment before flying. This is because the air pressure in a plane can make the swelling and bruising worse.

Pre-Treatment Instructions:

  • Do NOT consume alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising)

  • Avoid anti-inflammatory/blood-thinning medications, if possible for a period of 2 weeks before treatment. Medications and supplements such as aspirin, vitamin E, ginkgo Biloba, ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil supplements, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, and other NSAIDS have a blood-thinning effect and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections.

  • Bruising and swelling may be apparent in that time period. Sculptra does take longer to see results so plan accordingly with your provider.

  • Reschedule your appointment at least 24 hours in advance if you have a rash, cold sore, or blemish on the area.

  • If you have a history of cold sores please let your provider know.

  • Be sure to have a good breakfast, including food and drink before your procedure.

  • You are not a candidate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Post-Treatment Instructions:

  • Avoid significant movement or massage of the treated area. Unless instructed by the provider.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

  • Avoid extensive sun or heat for 72 hours.

  • Avoid consuming excess amounts of alcohol or salts to avoid excess swelling.

  • If you have swelling you may apply a cool compress for 15 minutes each hour.

  • Use Tylenol for discomfort.

  • Try to sleep face up and slightly elevated if you experience swelling.

  • Take Arnica to help the bruising and swelling, start at least 2 days prior to injections.
